Om oplægget
In 2016, an extremist right-wing and populist party took power in Poland and they immediately started making drastic changes to the country even affecting the constitution. They attacked the courts and appointed their own judges, they attacked the media, and they made one thing very clear: they would do everything to limit or completely dismantle any abortion rights remaining in the country.
In this class, we will discuss the history of abortion rights in Poland, a country that has gone from having the most liberal rights in Europe to the most restrictive in a matter of decades. We will also spend some time discussing the history of protest culture in Poland and learn about the many protests that have followed various rulings on abortion right infringement over the past few years in Poland. We will listen to music and watch images from protests that occurred in 2020 and discuss how an illiberal state can so violently disregard the will of the people.
